Leather shoes, skirts, bags, wallets etc. will always be in fashion, but can often get wrinkled or creased after being worn. Is there a device that can remove these leather wrinkles wrinkles easily? I did some research and found a awesome tool specifically designed for removing creases/ wrinkles in leather. It’s called a Leather iron.
A Leather Iron is an electrical device/ appliance that is purpose made for ironing real or faux leather or delicate fabrics in order to remove creases and wrinkles. These Irons are smaller and have a lower temperature setting compared to conventional household irons.
Leather skirts, jackets and bags can be stored away or packed in for a short travel holiday but they can also get easily wrinkled if not stored/ packed correctly. The Leather iron is the perfect gadget you need in order to get rid of any wrinkles or creases. Let’s take a look at what its all about.
What items can I iron with a leather iron.
You can iron a wide variety of leather clothing with a leather iron including leather skirts, pants, shoes, gloves, bags and even leather hides. Due to its low temperature settings it is the perfect device to iron leather.
How does a leather iron work.
This iron is much smaller than a household iron but works in the same way. It’s really designed for ironing smaller surfaces and has an adjustable temperature setting. Temp settings can be as low as 50 degrees Celsius all the up way to 350 degrees. (122 – 662 Degrees Fahrenheit) They work with a plug which is plugged into a electrical outlet.
In order to use a Leather Iron there are a few things you need to do before actually ironing leather.
- Firstly you need to add the Teflon tape (which is resistant to high heat) that comes with the leather iron onto the surface of the iron head (the part that gets hot and you iron with) Just peel off a section of tape and stick it on. Remember to do this before you switch on the iron, otherwise you might get a nasty burn.
- The handle is safe to hold and doesn’t get hot, only the head of the iron heats up so you can safely grip it and move it around when ironing.
- The iron head heats up quickly after its plugged in. The head of the iron is usually made from aluminium or brass and is good for heat retention. The small shaped iron head allows you to get into very small crevices and creases whether its on a bag or shoes. Once the tape is applied you need to apply the anti wrinkle oil supplied onto the leather surface that you are ironing.
- Plug in the iron and let it warm up.
- Lay your skirt, jacket or pants onto the ironing board or flat surface and begin to iron out the wrinkles.
The iron is fairly lightweight and weighs about 1 pound (500 grams) so it’s really easy to iron with. They are fairly small appliances usually ranging from about 200 -270mm in length. Just short of the length of a ruler. Its the perfect device to pack in your luggage when you go on a holiday.
Where can i buy and electric Leather iron.
You can buy a Leather iron on Amazon. Prices vary from different suppliers as they are a niche item.
I have seen Leather irons priced at $75 on Amazon. Check out this link if you would like to see the types that are available. I have also seen models on E-bay for as little for $18 – which is really very cheap – I can’t vouch for the quality of these, but I guess it’s a small price to pay for such a nifty gadget, even if it only lasts a year or two.
Will Ironing leather damage my skirt or pants.
No, ironing won’t ruin your leather skirt or pants if you use a iron specifically designed for use on leather. A Leather iron has an adjustable temperature setting that is much lower than a conventional iron. They also have a uniquely shaped head which is much smaller than a conventional iron which allows it to reach into tight corners and creases.
Why do I need to iron leather.
People mostly iron leather in order to get wrinkles out of their skirts, pants, bags and shoes etc. Some times, especially if you are travelling your leather skirt or bag can get creased.
This is where this handy little iron is very useful. They are small enough to travel with you anywhere you go. They are about the size of a curling iron and can be packed in a overnight bag if you are travelling.
Can you use a conventional iron on leather.
Yes, you can but its a lot more risky as a conventional iron gets much hotter and it is much bigger and therefore will be difficult to get into the hard to reach places on bags etc.
If you are going to iron leather with a normal home iron then you need to make sure you do the following:
- Make sure that you remove all the water inside the iron before using it. Also turn off the steam function of the iron as this could damage the leather.
- Set the iron’s temperature to it lowest possible setting before ironing anything.
- Place the item of clothing onto an ironing board or a flat surface that won’t burn.
- Turn your leather skirt or pants inside out. This is an extra precaution so as not to burn the leather.
- You will need to take further precautions and place a piece of paper or a brown paper bag between the iron surface and leather so there is no direct contact between the two surfaces. A cotton cloth or towel can work just as well.
- Begin ironing, but be careful as you could still burn the leather.
If possible test the iron on a small inconspicuous part of the leather. That way if you do damage it you can stop right away.
Conclusion.
I hope you found the info in this post useful and will now never have look at another piece of wrinkled leather ever again. Don’t forget to check out some of my other posts on leathercrafttoolbox.
